Translation, from Czech, of two stanzas from Josef Hora’s “Máchovské variace”

Two stanzas from Machian Variations

Poet, like you I am torn
by blasts of deep silence.
Confined by jealousy, by
manic pride imprisoned,

a captive of love, locked
in darkness that echoes
a victim’s wail, a falling stone
breaking upon vacant time.

These two stanzas are from Máchovské variace (Machian Variations), published in 1936 on the centenary of the death of Karel Hynek Mácha, Czech poet of the Romantic period.
